A coastal walk starting in Alcudia old town – THE ROUTE:
We will start our walk at the Plaza de Toros (Bull ring) in Alcudia old town, and from here we will walk to the top of the old walls from where we have great views of the old town area and the Bay of Pollensa.
At the first tower where we see steps, we will go down, and then to the left to leave the old walls and to take a road that will take us down to the coast.
On this road we will see some orchards, some villas and different houses like the one below that previously was a flour mill.
All along these country lanes we have great views of open countryside as we slowly leave the town behind us and head towards the coast.
Just after this house, turn right and take the street “Cami del Corral den Bennassar”, and at the end of the road you will find the Bay of Pollensa.
This area is quite popular with windsurfers and kitesurfers, and sure if it is windy you will see many of them having a good time. We will now continue following the coast, and we will find mostly summer residence houses that belong to people from other cities, such as Inca and Sa Pobla, and they come to these houses in summer and at weekends.
See how many platforms were built time ago to have their small piece of private sunbathing area, something legally not permitted now.
After a few minutes, in front of you on the left hand side, you can see a white house that it is said was a filming location of “The night manager” BBC series. From there, look at the other side of the bay, and you can see another of the filming locations: Sa Fortalessa.
We will then continue following the coast, and enjoying the views of the Bay of Pollensa and the Tramuntana mountain area. This is a very peaceful area, and there are many villas to rent.
As an interesting fact, one of the most famous inhabitants who lived in this area for a long time was Otto Skorzeny, one of Adolf Hitler’s lieutenants. It is said that he rescued Benito Mussolini when the Duce was arrested in 1943, though he was never involved in the plot against Hitler in 1944, and he was one of those who helped to quell the revolt. After World War II, Skorzeny was judged in Nuremberg and convicted. When fulfilling the sentence, he moved to Spain where General Franco tried to protect the fleeing Nazis, he lived in Alcudia and was one of the promoters of the “Operation ODESSA” that helped protect the ancient Nazis to remake their life And even organized some conspiracies so that Nazism returned to resurge with the help of some collaborators like Josef Mengele or Adolf Eichmann.
Our Alcudia walk explorer reccomendation:
If you want to make a swimming stop, this is a perfect place! Stop at one of the public piers, put your towel and get in the water!
After this area, we will find the small Port of Es Barcares, where you can see some of the typical Mallorcan boats, called “llauts”. In summer and at weekends, this is quite a busy harbour as it has a disembarking area, and many people come with their boats. They disembark there and enjoy a great day at sea.
We leave behind the Port of Barcares, and then we will be turning to the left taking the promenade. Es Barcarés outlines a bow-shaped inlet in front of a small islet. It’s also an example of those timeless nooks, where everything remains unspoilt. This charming inlet contains a few mixed types of beaches.
You’ll find solitude in these 100 meters of amazing beaches. Many bathers go for a swim on one of its side ends, where you’ll see a little breakwater and two small rocky coves. This modest nook was in years past one of the most popular places in Alcúdia, where locals went to cool down during the hot summer days. Maybe that’s the reason why the “alcudiencs”, especially the elderly, drop by daily to have a good time at this marvellous place.
Our Alcudia walk explorer recommendation:
If you are thirsty or hungry, here you will find the Red Rum, an English bar offering nice food and cold drinks, before to continue the walk.
We leave the promenade and we continue straight on, and we will see 2 hotels, the More Vermell and Panoramic. Es Morer Vermell is a 200 metre-long sandy and rocky beach. It’s a quiet, pleasant and peaceful place to relax. Alcúdia’s old town is only two kilometres away from here. This fact, in addition to its calm waters and a peaceful environment makes it a favourite with locals that summer in and summer out come to this beach to take a swim or have a chat. Time does not seem to go by in this nook, that’s why it still keeps an ancient charming look.
After the beach and as we follow the coast, we will continue passing some beautiful villas, and further on we will leave the road where we see 3 bin containers (on the right) and a small house by the sea (on the left). We follow a path very close to the coast, and it will take us through a beautiful pine tree area before we find an old abandoned quarry.
The views here are outstanding, and you can see the Formentor Peninsula, with the famous beach and the Formentor Cape where the lighthouse is.
It is also worth to mention the house on our right hand side. This place is called “Castell de Manresa”, and it was built around 1715 being a fortress, now it is a private property converted into a luxurious villa available for rents and wedding.
Continue following the path and then we will see Mal Pas residential area, and we will find a hidden gem, The Sant Joan beach. Note that there is also an old military bunker by the coast from where we have a spectacular view of the beach.
We will descend to the beach, and we will go to its end to follow the coastal path towards our next stop: Sant Pere Beach.
This is a small fine white sand beach hardly 100 metres long, facing the bay of Pollensa. Sant Pere beach is located near the residential area of Mal Pas, Sant Joan Beach and Cocodrilo Marina and it offers a splendid view over Formentor and the bay of Pollensa. It is an accessible beach and offers plenty of facilities.
The atmosphere is of complicity among locals, island experts and people who seek this kind of places where it’s easy to reach but still is a peaceful place.
Our Alcudia walk explorer recommendation:
Sant Joan beach or Sant Pere beach are 2 great stops: crystal waters for a swim, and a bar for a refreshing drink.
We will leave the beach walking up to the main road (this will be the only hill on the walk), we go to the right, and after 50 meters, we turn left (see photo below) taking a street half asphalted, and at the end to the right. This rural road will take us back to Alcudia Old Town.
Our Alcudia walk explorer recommendation:
Further on, you will see the photo below, if you took this small path, you will be taken back to More Vermell Beach.
Continuing always on the main road, you will get to the back of the Plaza de Toros, which is our final stop, and the place where we started the walk.
Our Alcudia walk explorer recommendation:
If the bullring is open, take the chance to visit it and to have a glass of Jerez at the bar, this will be a nice end to this walk.
